Traveling takes some serious skill. Sure, it takes money to travel, but it takes skill to enjoy it. When you’re traveling, you need to keep a couple of things in mind like where you’re going and what you’re planning on doing. But there are some tips that only the most experienced travelers know that amateurs would otherwise have no idea about. Which is why I canvased some of the most experienced travelers I know and compiled a short list of travel tips you should never, ever forget:
1. Plan Ahead
One of the biggest travel sins amateurs commit is not thinking ahead. And I don’t mean round trip flights. You should know the places you’re going to visit and have a general idea of what you want to do while you’re in your chosen vacation destination. Don’t go in knowing nothing about the area you’re in, think ahead and have a plan.
2. Be Flexible
Plans fall through all the time. Don’t be upset if things don’t turn out the way you’ve planned. Don’t feel discouraged and let that disappointment hinder your trip. Make sure you’re willing to compromise and change your plans without throwing a fit if you need to.
3. Ask the Locals for Suggestions
Don’t be afraid to talk to the people around you for suggestions of what to do. If you’re looking for the best food in the city you’re in, other tourists are probably not going to know where that is. You’re going to want to look around you and ask the locals, ask the waiters, ask people working in stores around you. They’ll know the best places to eat or shop or do whatever! Plus they might be able to lead you to less touristy areas which make for special memories.
4. Never Flaunt your Wealth
When you’re on vacation, you might want to flash your wealth. While you might feel like a baller while running around as a jet-setter, criminals will definitely take notice.
When tourists get robbed it usually isn’t because they were in a bad area, it is because they were running around with their Coach bag unzipped or flaunting their wealth while walking around.
5. Charge Your Phone
When you’re in another country or city, you need to make sure your phone is charged. For one, you need to be able to communicate if you get separated or find yourself in trouble. Secondly, you’re going to want to be able to take pictures! God forbid you to make a memory and forget to catch it on film.
6. Travel in SMALL groups
To put it lightly, big groups fucking suck. You shouldn’t be trying to travel with thirty of your closest friends. I promise that you will be miserable.
7. Pack light
If you want to achieve jet-setting status, you’re going to need to pack light. Yes, I know you’re going to want to bring twelve pairs of shoes, but refrain. You only need essentials. You’ll want to have room to bring things you buy home with you, and you’ll want to have less luggage to lug around.
